I am a firm believer in eating the same things I put on my skin. Spirulina is a great example of the benefits of digesting and absorbing the same powerful ingredient.
Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae or cyanobacteria that grows in both salt and fresh water. It is highly nutritious and a great source of protein, copper, and B vitamins. It is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, and antioxidants that can help protect cells from damage. Spirulina also increases nitric oxide production in your body as well, which helps your blood vessels relax.
Spirulina is known to have a positive effect on gut health, which may improve the appearance of the skin. A healthy gut microbiome is associated with improved skin health including skin reduced skin inflammation. The microbiomes in our gut and on our skin communicate so the health of one microbiome impacts the other.
Eating/Digesting your Spirulina
Spirulina boosts powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies indicate that spirulina can lower triglycerides and improve cholesterol levels, which leads to improved heart health. Fatty structures in your body can become oxidized, leading to the increased possibility of many diseases. Research suggests that the antioxidants in spirulina may help prevent this.
It may have anti-cancer properties. Research shows that it may help reduce cancer occurrence and tumor size in various cancers.
Reduce exercise-induced lipid peroxidation, inflammation, and muscle damage. Spirulina has also been shown to improve muscle endurance and strength.

Spirulina may increase production of nitric oxide and reduce blood pressure levels. Including spirulina in your diet could significantly reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, especially for people with high blood pressure levels.
May improve seasonal allergy symptoms. Studies found that spirulina was more effective than traditional over the counter drugs commonly used to treat allergies, in improving allergy symptoms and decreasing inflammation.

Supports blood sugar control. Studies suggests that spirulina may benefit people with type 2 diabetes by significantly reducing fasting blood sugar levels
Applying to skin/Absorbing
Because of these qualities, spirulina also makes a great addition to your skin care routine.
Spirulina is Rich in nutrients, vitamins and both fatty and amino acids, giving it the ability to boost the overall health and radiant appearance of your skin. It also prevents acne build up, decreases inflammation, tones the skin and encourages cell turnover to make it an anti-aging powerhouse.
Research studies show that spirulina has antioxidant benefits, a brightening effect, and moisturizing properties. These benefits are associated with the use of spirulina extract, like is used in our products, not the powdered form.
Due to the many antioxidants, it has anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects.
Spirulina can also prevent skin damage leading to wrinkles and signs of aging by fighting free radicals.
Phycocyanin, the main active ingredient in spirulina, gives algae its rich blue-green color. It is also what actives cellular antioxidant activity resulting in the elimination of free radicals.
As if that wasn’t enough, it also contains many important amino acids, including glycine and proline, which keep the skin firm and support collagen production.
Spirulina does possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, which could potentially help with conditions like acne and eczema, but this needs to be studied more in-depth,”
Don’t confuse it with Chlorella is a type of green algae. Spirulina is a blue-green algae, cyanobacteria with different vitamin and mineral contents.
Spirulina contains more omega-3 fatty acids, provitamin A, and magnesium. Chlorella also has a high fiber content that cannot be easily digested by humans.
Precautions
If you have an allergy to spirulina, iodine, or seaweed and seafood, avoid eating or using it topically. It’s also not suitable for people with a rare genetic condition known as phenylketonuria (PKU). Spirulina contains a substance that can’t be metabolized by individuals with this condition.
According to experts, people with any sort of autoimmune disorder should avoid it as well because it has effects that stimulate the immune system.
